Elroy Bryan Passes YCLA Baton to Collin Anglin

After a very successful and busy year with speaking engagements, Elroy Bryan passed the YCLA baton over the the 2010 recipient, Collin Anglin. Both leaders are also athletes and have transitioned that dedication to set new track records for the Young Caymanian Leaders Foundation and the effectiveness with targeting youth with positive messages.

Recently, the two recipients of the YCLA met to get to know each other better, as well as for Mr. Bryan to share his experience with Mr. Anglin about his 2009 YCLA year.

Anyone who has had the honour to hear Mr. Bryan's motivational message would know that his soft words ring loudly and that his endearing 'call to action' can be hear through classrooms across the Cayman Islands.

In addition to being a full-time teacher at the Lighthouse School and dedicated father to a young family, Mr. Bryan managed to find the time to speak approximately once per week for his entire year to schools, churchs, service clubs or other community-based initiatives.

Mr. Bryan admitted that he "has never been as vocal as he has been in the last year and that he has grown a great deal from this opportunity to share his message". He continuously received thanks, support and encouragement from students, teachers and parents. "I was even approached and congratulated during everyday tasks such as picking up groceries." Always a gracious leader, Mr. Bryan made time for everyone interested in speaking with him.

When asked what advice he would give to Mr. Anglin, who is starting his own busy year, Mr. Bryan commented that " the main thing is to speak from the heart and to have a clear message that you feel that will hit home. We all have a stake in the Cayman Islands and we all have to do what we can to make the Cayman Islands great."

And they will.... Already, Mr. Anglin has spoken to over 3000 people, primarily youth within various schools. His goal is to reach every student within his YCLA year.

Mr. Anglin's calendar of speaking engagements is filling up very quickly and the youth are very receptive to his message. His delivery focuses on the importance of making good choices with the company that you keep and respecting other people's property.

YCLA 2010 - presenting Keynote Miles McPherson

YCLA 2010 Keynote Speaker - Miles McPherson

Down to earth, bold and funny, Miles McPherson is known for challenging people to make life-changing decisions.

Whether sharing the stage with a former U.S. president or or addressing a prison yard full of inmates, whether appearing on “Larry King Live” or talking to a women’s club down the street, Miles McPherson has a gift for communicating to just about anyone.

McPherson, a former defensive back for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers turned megachurch pastor, has a track record of appealing to a diverse audience, large and small, American and international. His humorous, yet bold, down-to-earth style has become his trademark.

He is comfortable before a television camera, and has been a guest on “The O’Reilly Factor,” “Larry King Live,” and “Good Morning America.” He was asked to lead prayer at the Republican National Convention in 2008. He has led events in Africa, Jamaica, Belize, and Canada.

Miles’ latest book, DO Something! Make Your Life Count promotes that “The Time to Act Is Now - The world needs you. It's broken. Your neighbors are in desperate need of a helping hand. If you're not content to cruise through life, it's up to you to DO Something!”

YCLA 2010 - Saturday Night at the Ritz

YCLA 2010 will be televised live on Cayman27 beginning at 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 20th. Five Finalist for 2010, from left to right, are Felix Manzanares, Tammy Ebanks Bishop, Krishan Welcome, Melanie McLaughlin and Collin Anglin.

For over eleven years the YCLA has worked to keep the island’s youth on track by providing them with excellent role models in which to identify with. This has been accomplished by involving the community who have partnered with the Foundation by way of identifying and helping to celebrate the lives of those young persons who instinctively “walk the walk and talk the talk”. By showcasing these wonderful young people, the point is made and the finalist will continue the dialogue via public appearances throughout the year.

"Many thanks always to the community for recommending all of the nominees this year, we have received incredible feedback about these five finalists. The entire group is very enthusiastic and dedicated", comments Melissa Wolfe from the Foundation. "More than ever our younger generation needs positive examples to emulate. We are surrounded by great young leaders everyday and the Foundation is proud to recognize and reward them for their contributions to the Cayman Islands".

For the year 2010 the Foundation has chosen to playfully pass the baton of challenge on to our youth, daring them to become all that they are destined to be. The 2010 Theme: “Dare to Be…” will be unveiled the night of the black-tie celebration and will literally spell out the characteristics most often associated with great leaders. These Be adjectives will be presented in a visually stimulating and compelling way and their definition will be emphasized by the example demonstrated by our five remarkable finalists.

These messages will target everyone island wide but will pay special attention to Caymans’ emerging adults and potential leaders. Young people, says… deserve our undivided attention; they are Caymans’ greatest assets and the hope for a better tomorrow.

YCLA 2010 Five Finalists Announced

2010 YCLA Finalists (left to right) Felix Manzanares, Melanie McLaughlin, Krishan Welcome, Tammy Ebanks Bishop and Collin Anglin

The honorary board of the Young Caymanian Leadership Awards (YCLA) is proud to announce the five finalists for the 2010 YCLA.

In no particular order, the five finalists are:
Felix Manzanares
Melanie McLaughlin
Krishan Welcome
Tammy Ebanks Bishop
Collin Anglin

"Meeting them all for the first time was a great occasion for the five to share in the excitement of becoming a finalist", comments Melissa Wolfe of the YCLA. "Appreciation goes to all those who took the time to nominate and honour a young Caymanian, since all candidates come from these nominations".

Being nominated is the first step to the process. The next step is becoming one of the five finalists. In order to become a finalist, a panel of judges from the honorary board reviews and assesses each nomination received and make their recommendations for the top five. A difficult task because of the quality and calibre of the nominations.

The next step is a judging interview for each finalist taped on video for further scoring. Each honorary board member views the judging video and scores based on various criteria. Each score card is individually sealed in envelopes and calculated by a third party, accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, to keep the name of the recipient a well-guarded secret.

Not until the night of Saturday, February 20th does that name get revealed to a live audience during the broadcast. Cayman27 is gearing up for another live telecast, which will begin at 7pm.

With only three weeks until the big event, the five finalists are already receiving messages and good wishes of congratulations for this new achievement.

"Our five finalists for 2010 are impressive and very diverse. We have various backgrounds, professions and passions. What they share is a combined and sincere dedication to Cayman's youth and the future of the Cayman Islands. Every single finalist is a rolemodel on many levels", adds Melissa Wolfe.

Complete biographies and questionnaires to get to know the finalists will be published in the coming weeks.
